Light of Langsuir
In the summer of 2024, I participated solo in the "Barehands Residency" directed by Malaysian artist Juhari Said, and as a result, held a solo exhibition titled "Light of Langsuir" at the National Art Gallery Langkawi, Malaysia. My work explores the theme of the "relationship between humans and nature." During the residency, I focused on the fern plant Paku Langsuir, which grew in the garden of studio. This plant symbolizes a female ghost in Malaysian mythology, and I was intrigued by its mythological significance. Using the leaves of this plant, I created works that symbolically fused the light of Malaysia with the sun worship from Japanese mythology, blending the myths of both countries. In the Light of Langsuir exhibition, I displayed an installation where 21 pieces were randomly suspended from the ceiling of the white exhibition space, with the fern leaves seemingly floating in the air. The movement of the leaves, reminiscent of a ghostly presence, allowed viewers to experience the atmosphere of the jungle surrounding the studio. This exhibition, which metaphorically intertwined the mythologies of Japan and Malaysia, held great significance for me, being presented against the rich natural backdrop of Langkawi Island.
2024年夏、私はマレーシアのアーティストJuhari Saidがディレクターを務める「Barehands Resicency」に単独で参加し、その成果としてマレーシア国立美術館ランカウイ分館で個展「Light of Langsuir」を開催した。 私の作品テーマは「人と自然の関係性」で、今回のレジデンスでは、スタジオの庭に生えていたシダ植物「Paku Langsuir（パク・ランスウィヤー）」に着目した。この植物は、マレーシア神話で女性の亡霊を象徴しており、その神話的な意味に興味を引かれたのだ。私はこの植物の葉を使い、マレーシアの光を日本神話の太陽信仰と重ね合わせ、両国の神話を象徴的に融合させた作品を制作した。 個展では、白い展示スペースの天井から21枚の作品をランダムに吊り下げ、葉の作品が空間を漂うように見えるインスタレーションを展開。葉がまるで幽霊のように揺れ動く様子は、鑑賞者にスタジオ周辺のジャングルの気配を追体験させるものだった。日本とマレーシアの神話的要素を織り交ぜ、ランカウイ島の豊かな自然を背景に開催されたことに大きな意義を感じた。

About the Barehands Residency
Barehands Residency (BR) was co-founded in 2010 by Malaysian master printmaker Juhari Said. It is located on his 4.5-acre land known as Akaldiulu in Hulu Langat, Selangor, Malaysia. Initially established as a collaborative project between Juhari and fellow artists from Jordan, Indonesia and Japan. BR has steadily grown over the years, welcoming participants from the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan and beyond. The residency has held successful series in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and most recently in 2023; each fostering an environment of creativity and cross-cultural dialogue.
「Barehands Residency（ベアハンズ・レジデンシー／以下、BR）」は、マレーシアのアーティスト Juhari Said（ジュハリ・サイード）が2010年にアーティスト仲間と共同設立したAIR事業である。BRは、日本、ヨルダン、フィリピン、インドネシア、台湾、そして世界各国からの参加者を迎え、年々着実に成長してきている。このレジデンスは、2014年、2015年、2016年、2017年、そして最近では2023年にシリーズを開催し、成功を収めている。
